Not enough time? That’s bullshit.

Everyone’s favorite excuse is that they don’t have enough time.

“I would get in shape if I had the time.”

“I would pick up a language if I had enough time.”

“I would practice a musical instrument if I had more time.”

“I would go back to school if I had more time.”

“I would start my own business if I had the time.”

All these excuses are complete bullshit. I don’t care who you are, you have enough time to do what you need to do. Saying that you don’t have time to accomplish your goals is a cop-out. It’s a convenient excuse and it keeps you from getting ahead with your life. When your time is up, you will be sorry that you didn’t get to do what you wanted to do.

I was reading Arnold Schwarzenegger’s New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding where he talks about being a soldier in the Austrian army. He had to wake up at 6 AM to drive a tank and do military work all day. Despite this strenuous schedule, he still found time to work out for 2 or 3 hours a day. He would wake up at 5 AM and lift. Then he worked out at the end of his day after his army duties were over.

Wes Montgomery, the greatest jazz guitarist ever, had a wife and 7 children. He still found time to practice everyday, play 2 gigs a night WHILE holding down a day job as a welder. He played with his thumb so that he wouldn’t wake up his kids when practicing. The result is one of the most famous and copied sounds in Jazz. He turned a tough situation into an advantage.

There are countless stories like these of people who didn’t have time, money, resources or luck, but still accomplished their goals though determination and discipline.

Time is our most valuable resource.

You can always make more money, but you can never create more time. We all have to work with 24 hours in a day. Everyone in the world is equal in that respect. The trick is how you use your alloted time. Here is how you can increase your efficiency:

1) Make short and long term goals and stick with them

* Pick a few things that you want to accomplish. Then, make short term and long term goals to make it happen. Make you goals realistic but challenging.
* Figure out what you need to do every day to get to your monthly goal. Figure out what you need to do every month to get to your yearly goal. Figure out what you need to do every year to get to your lifetime goal.
* The more you reach your goals, the easier it will get. The positive feedback and feeling of accomplishment you get will motivate you to stay diligent and disciplined.
* Take a couple minutes everyday in the morning to remind yourself of your goals. This will keep you focused throughout the day. At night, before you go to sleep, reflect on how well you accomplished you goals and if you need to make any adjustments.

2) Analyze and then optimize every aspect of your life

We waste more time than you think. Take everything you do in your life and figure out how you can do it more efficiently.

* If you have a job, figure out how you can be a more efficient worker so that you don’t have to work late or on weekends to catch up.
* Instead of taking an hour lunch break, take 15 minutes to eat and use the remaining 45 minutes to practice a skill, study a subject, or do a quick workout.
* Instead of aimlessly watching TV, use a DVR or Tivo to record shows that you want to watch and watch them when you have time to do it. This way, you can skip commercials and you won’t get sidetracked with shows that are just a waste of time.
* Figure out activities and people that prevent you from reaching your goals and cut them out of your life.
* Optimize the most mundane and repetitive tasks to give you more time. Examples of this are:

1. Take quicker showers
2. Have your laundry done instead of doing it yourself. You will save a lot of time and the cost difference is trivial.
3. Find quicker ways to cook, like using a crock pot or finding quick recipes.

3) Multi-task whenever possible.

Whenever possible, try to do more than one thing at once.

* While watching TV, practice scales on your guitar or on a keyboard. This serves to improve muscle memory. Or, you can watch TV while riding an exercise bike, doing exercises or stretching.
* If you ride the train or the bus, use that time to study, practice, plan or read.
* If you drive, you can use that time to practice with audio language courses. If you are a musician, you can work on scatting with music or singing exercises if you are a vocalist.
* Sometimes, you can do an activity which will provide you with multiple benefits at the same time. For instance, picking up a martial art like boxing, kickboxing, mixed martial arts, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or Krav Maga accomplishes the following:
1. Keeps you in shape.
2. Teaches you a skill
3. Provides a way to make friends
4. Teaches you self-defense

You will be amazed at the variety and talent of people you will meet at a martial arts school. It’s a great way to expand your network. Find activities like these that give you more bang for the buck.

4) Plan ahead to avoid wasting time

A lot of time can be saved by taking a minute or two to plan ahead.

* The night before, make a quick checklist of what you need to pack with you in the morning. Or, pack everything the night before. This way, you won’t forget anything in the morning scramble.
* Go into a practice or workout session with a detailed plan. This way, you won’t be trying to figure out what you should be doing when you’re at the gym or when you have the instrument in your hands.

5) Make a schedule and stick with it

* Don’t start off with an impossible schedule. Start with an easy schedule that allows for things and events that you didn’t plan. It’s better to create a schedule that’s easily doable and build up than to start with a hard schedule that you won’t be able to keep.
* Give yourself some time to relax. Make sure your schedule has some down time so you can chill with your family or have some time to do non-goal oriented stuff.

These are a few of the things I’ve found that have helped me be more efficient. Please feel free to add to this list! I’m looking forward to more tips.

I MISS YOU!!!
